We need more kindness in the world
Because the world is full of tension and unrest. Because life is short. Because it really does make a difference.
I think Abraham Lincoln said it best when he addressed an auditorium full of students.
"Be excellent to each other."

Back in time to Saint Elmo's
This past weekend I went back in time. No, I wasn't in a DeLorean with the Doc. I was watching "St. Elmo's Fire".
I'm one of those people who can watch a certain movie and instantly be transported back to a specific time and place. People feel that way with music a lot. There's a clinical term for it, I think. Associative Mood Takes Me Back something or other. Or, more simply, nostalgia.
So, there I was late Sunday afternoon watching Demi, Rob, Judd, Emilio, Ally, Andrew, and Mare. And instantly I was back in my town's small theater with my two best friends. We were sixteen then and we thought these young people on screen who had just graduated from college were so cool.
It made me smile to remember such good times. And I'm grateful to still be friends with those girls who sat next to me as we watched a group of friends and dreamed of ourselves someday hanging out at a bar, having a drink and trying to figure out life.
I'm adding the pic below because, who didn't love (and want?!) the huge Billy Idol face painted on Jules' apartment wall?

And that's how I found out I didn't get the job
I'm in the market for a job, again. The one I mentioned starting back in June didn't work out. As it turns out, it's for the better. In the meantime I thought I would write about all the ways in which I found out I didn't get the job I interviewed for.
First, there's the impersonal and pre-formatted email that simply says, "Upon review we've decided to go with another candidate." Hey, at least I got my answer, however stale and carbon-copied it may be. Then again, it's easier on the company this way, not to mention less confusing. I would hate to get a personalized rejection letter, with the wrong name! "Dear Alice..." Damn, I didn't get the job. Wait, who's Alice?
A while back I interviewed with a company not once, not twice, but three times with a different department head each time. After the third interview they said they would let me know either way at week's end. Yeah, right. Two weeks later I got a call from the son of the President of that company asking if I could come and interview for his business. That's how I found out I didn't get the other job. Nothing like being passed around like a note in study hall.
A lot of times I see a new ad a couple weeks later for the same position I just interviewed for. Hey, thanks for getting back to me like you said you would. How about I hit the "Apply" button and send you my resume 78 times?
I used to send a follow-up 'thank you for taking the time to interview me' email to the jobs I really wanted. I thought it would make a good impression and keep my name fresh in their minds. But then I got to feeling too kiss-assy and stopped.
Bill says I should call these companies back after a week or so and just ask outright if they made a decision. I'm too stubborn to do that. It makes me feel desperate. Then again, maybe Edible Arrangements has a "Please hire me, you won't regret it" bouquet of chocolate covered strawberries I could send? If not, they should. Hey, Edible Arrangements, call me. I have many other such interesting ideas.

How the hell did you find this blog?
Somehow a search term for non horror Halloween movies brought some people to my blog. So, not merely content with this being a cool thing, I went and conducted such a search using those keywords.
As it turns out I couldn't find myself. It figures. I gave up on page twenty-something of my Google search. The reason I kept going was because I wanted to see how far someone would go to find what they were looking for. But then that whole this-is-taking-too-long-I-can't-be-bothered-with-this took over and I gave up.
However, I did come across some interesting sites in relation to my search. Actually, it was more of my interpretation of them that was interesting. And a bit scary.
realmofryan - I read this as real mo fryan. Considering this was a search of non horror movies I thought a site about cooking was odd.
hecklerspray - And my instant reaction was, "Ew."
boombotix - Which I thought said boob o tix. I have no idea what I was thinking here. Perhaps it's time at last to see the eye doctor.
straightdope - Well, alright then.
I'm sure all of these sites are excellent and my reaction and comments are no reflection on them at all, in fact it says more about me and my knack for reading things wrong.
Also, I want to say that the referring sites that lead people to my blog are scary. I mean, We're gonna need a bigger boat, scary.

Fearless Beauty
I love when I can show my son a famous person who has achieved success in spite of their diabetes. Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor. Olympic skier, Kris Freeman. And now, Miss Idaho, Sierra Sandison, who will be proudly wearing her insulin pump as she competes in the Miss America pageant Sunday.
It sends a great message to all diabetics that there is no shame in having this disease. It also serves to encourage those who were previously on the fence about getting an insulin pump.
By fearlessly wearing her insulin pump in full view she is saying, "Yes, I'm a diabetic and this device is part of me."

What I'll never forget about 9/11
I'll never forget, thirteen years ago...
looking across the Hudson and watching the City on fire.
worrying about family, friends and neighbors at work in NYC that day and hoping, praying that they made it home safely.
the smoke. It was unbelievable.
watching the towers crumble. It was shocking and surreal. One minute they were there and then..nothing.
the stories on the news of people searching for loved ones. I cried with them.
the eerie silence in the skies as all flights were grounded for a week.
joining my neighbors and others everywhere as we sat outside and lit candles for peace and remembrance in the nights that followed.
worrying about the immediate future.
feeling so sad, angry, and scared.
donating food, juice, and what little else I could to the mobile drives that went into the city and re-supplied those working to search, rescue, and give aid.
feeling pride as our country united in strength and love.

Up on your feet, somewhere there's music playing
Hey! How's Trix? Tricks?
I love asking that in lieu of "How are you?" even though it's a confusing question with a truckload of answers. Trix, as in the cereal? Good I guess, even though I had a bowl of Cocoa Pebbles this morning. Trix, as in Trixie, Alice Kramden's friend/neighbor on The Honeymooners? She's fine. She and Norton will be over for dinner. Tricks as in turning tricks? Whoa. See what I mean?
I haven't been blogging as much as I should be and not for lack of topics either. I have dozens scribbled away in a notebook and in my brain. Yesterday I stared at the screen for longer than seemed necessary and the words wouldn't come. Oh sure I could have slapped something together but that wouldn't be fair to anyone who comes here looking to be amused.
I've also been in a bit of a funk. Life hasn't been a bowl of cherries (or Trix) lately. It's time to get back to fun. So I have decided to include more Pop Culture references, particularly past faves from when I was younger. You will still get some serious posts and some goofy posts but also the fluff of entertainment thrown in. I promise no celebrity gossip; just lots of nostalgia and a few trips down memory lane.
Now, to start things off and tie this whole post together, I give you "One Day At A Time". Some of you (older) folks might remember this show about a single mom raising two teen-age girls and starring a very young Valerie Bertinelli. I used to watch it and hearing the theme song again made me smile and lifted my spirits. Okay, I sang along, too. I dare you not to; it's very catchy. The lyrics also helped me remember a few things.
This is life, the one you get so go and have a ball.

Fearless in school and life
If you tuned in last Friday expecting to see something inspirational for Fearless Friday, I'm sorry you were disappointed. I couldn't come up with anything proper and I wasn't in the right frame of mind. However, I think I might keep Fearless Friday alive a bit longer but only if I have something worth posting so that means there might be some Fridays that go by with no Fearless post and something else (or nothing) in its place.
Today's Fearless post is for all the kids and young adults who started school this week and last and found themselves in the unfamiliar surroundings of a new campus/school.
When my son expressed his anxiety and nervousness prior to the first day of middle school I told him he would be fine. That despite how scary it might seem he had to see it through. Then I told him that life will be filled with uncertainties and terrifying moments but you must be fearless because so often they will become the best experiences.
Face the scary.
Embrace the unknown.
And Be Fearless!
It just might be worth it in the end.

I wash my hands of this weirdness
Here are some amusingly weird things I've overheard and participated in recently. Who knows, this could become a weekly segment entitled: "I wash my hands of this weirdness."
My kid and I stopped in at McDonald's for a quick lunch one early afternoon. Actually it was around 11:30 in the morning but since they stop breakfast at 10:30 (idk, weird hour) let's call it lunch. So we were seated across from this couple that were about my parents age. They had the table covered with papers and files and her laptop and a coffee cup. A heated discussion ensued. Then the man casually says, "We should get something to eat."
Of course, how novel, you are after all in an eating establishment, I think to myself.
Then he asks the woman, "You want to go to Fuddruckers?" Then they pack up and leave McDonald's. To go eat somewhere else. I so wanted to follow them and see if this was a pattern. Maybe they sat in Fuddruckers and while eating their meal debated on going to Wendy's for something to drink?
Weird.
Last week I went to the bank to deposit a birthday check my son received. Here's how that turned out:
Teller: (after looking at check and my signature) Is this your son?
Now, I wanted to smart-ass her and say something like, No, I was standing in the checkout at Wal-Mart when some random woman asked me if I could deposit her son's check.
Me: Yes.
Then she looked at the check again and back at me.
Me: If you need him to come verify I'll have to sign him out of P.E. class first.
Teller: No, no but you need to indicate that you are his mother on the back of the check.
So I had to write "Mom" next to my signature. (Curious, are women coming into banks and depositing strange kids' checks? Is this a thing?)
Teller: (while completing the transaction) Have you ever thought about opening up a savings account for your son?
Me: (a little confused) Um, he already has one, this one that you're depositing the money into.
Teller: Oh, right. I'm sorry.
Weird.

Busy, but not too busy for sweets
I've been busy. I'm sorry. Here, have a brownie...with powdered sugar on top. No, that isn't a bribe. But, is it working?
Okay, so school started on Monday. And then Tuesday was Chris's birthday. There's been notebooks and pencils and folders to buy. And cake to eat. And parental forms to fill out. And more cake. And homework to help with. But no more cake cause we ate it all. ::boo boo face::
I've also been on some weird organizing/cleaning kick, which explains the neatnik status of my kid's room and also my closet. Still haven't gotten around to last school year's mess of papers and notebooks but I've concealed it nicely so it looks more like organized chaos and less like a school-nado ran through.
I've also got a touch of the blues, which might have something to do with summer ending. Even though our weather will stay summer-warm through September (Groundhog Summer), I still feel like it's a formal ending since Chris is back at school. So, with that in mind, I haven't felt much like blogging, despite having a notebook full of blogging ideas that practically write themselves, not to mention several drafts that need finishing.
I promise to get my butt in gear and post more. But first, more brownies! mmm good!
PS: This is an image I borrowed. I did not bake these. Although, now I wish I did.

Diabetes and the first day of school
Today was the first day of school for Chris. The first day of Middle school. I had been quietly dreading this day since last June when he graduated from Elementary. Of course on the outside I was all, "This will be fine." "It'll be great." Especially when talking to him in the days leading up to today but I was more or less trying to reassure myself.
Last night I calmed his worries. I never led on that I was anxious myself. I didn't sleep well, either. Hey, I remember what it was like to go to a new school. Back then we called it Junior High School. We also walked uphill both ways in the snow with no shoes. Okay, maybe not both ways.
Normally I'm not an over-protective, hovercraft of a parent but I do worry about him in regards to his diabetes and how this transition will affect him.
Will he be nervous? And how will that affect his blood-sugar levels?
Will his teachers be understanding of his disease?
Will his classmates be nice to him?
Will he have someone to eat lunch with?
All these things were going on in my head. When I spoke to some other d-parents who have older kids and so they had already experienced this angst, they all said, "He'll be fine." "Don't worry, it'll be great." Wasn't I telling my kid the same things? Is there an echo..echo..echo?
When I picked him up from school I started asking questions as we walked to the car. His answers were brief but in short: School was good. Some of his former classmates were in his classes. It was a little boring but it was also exciting.
As for his diabetes, upon dismissal he informed each teacher that he was a diabetic and they all appreciated him letting them know. Also, his blood-glucose numbers were good and in-range all day.
And, he had a friend and former classmate to eat lunch with.

Hump Day confessions
I confess to the following:
My son starts Middle School on Monday and I'm a little anxious about it.
I've also fallen behind on my blogging which explains why I'm late to the link up today. Last week I had my post all written and published and then realized late in the day that I forgot to link up. Oy.
I caught one of those annoying summer colds that I'm just now getting over which has seriously sucked the fun out of end-of-summer plans. We still plan on getting some swimming in, though.

A few days ago my computer had a Windows update and long story short, my computer fizzled and wouldn't start up at reboot. So I uncharacteristically remained calm, consulted some sites via my phone and did a system recovery. However, when I initially thought that I would have to bring her in to the computer doctor for a fix and what with the unexpected cost and inability to do everything I do on here, for days, I did have a moment of panic. Now we're all good, thankfully.

Musical milestones
This weekend marks a few music milestones. Being a music and Pop Culture lover I thought I would give them a mention. For one, it's the anniversary of Elvis' death, which, as a fan of The King, I do recognize every August 16th. Maybe that makes me a geek but I'm a cool geek 'cause Elvis, The King of Rock 'n Roll!
At one point Saturday night I was flipping thru the channels and I came upon a PBS broadcast of Elvis' "Aloha from Hawaii" concert. So I called my mom to let her know and when she answered I could hear Elvis singing in the background. She was watching the same show. Yeah, sometimes we share that single moment of cool.
Also, it's the anniversary of Woodstock, a music festival I would have paid good money to attend had I been old enough to actually go. Sure there was mud and parking was a nightmare but can you imagine seeing the iconic legends who performed there? Whoa.
Anyway, after the sad and serious of this past week I thought I would post about some good times, even if I didn't personally take part in them. Peace and love to all. And good music!

Hump Day confession
In light of recent events I confess I just don't feel the funny for blogging so this week's hump day confessions will be short and sweet. I feel a little like that Spongebob episode where Squidward tricks him into thinking he broke his laugh-box.

Hump Day Link Up
Hey I'm linking up with Kathy at Vodka and Soda for Hump Day confessions!
I confess in all seriousness that I don't know the hows or the whys but something I wrote was published on The Humor Daily. When (or if) you go to the site, scroll down. I'm 5th below the raccoons but 4 above the Fifty Cent post. I guess this is pretty cool.
My son woke up with scary high blood sugar yesterday morning. He tried to take care of it by himself but then his insulin pump failed on him and in frustration and feeling sick to his stomach he finally came and got me. So so proud of him. For trying to handle it on his own. For dealing with his diabetes with such grace and bravery.
When dinner was finished cooking I started eating immediately and despite blowing on it like Jack Frost in Winter, it still burned my tongue. If I wasn't so hungry I would've put it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to cool down. Then I asked Bill, What's the opposite of a microwave? And he said, Cryogenics? And so I explained that if we have microwaves to instantly heat food there should be something to instantly cool food that's too hot to eat for the starving people. He just looked at me in that you need help way. I still think this is a good idea.
That's all I got for ya this week. Feel free to share your confessions, antics, pizza. It's all good.

Celebrate Underwear Day
You've probably seen those Peeps commercials that celebrate unusual and in some cases, unheard of holidays because as they say "every day is a holiday."
According to the website, Days of the Year, today, August 5th is Underwear Day. Bet you didn't know that? Well, I didn't. Anyway, today is a day to publicly acknowledge your unmentionables so wear your undies with pride.
Put on your best bikinis, briefs, or boyshorts and strut like you're a Victoria's Secret angel. Or, if you're a guy and so inclined, pop on Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll" and dance as if your parents are away for the weekend.
Happy Underwear Day to you and yours! In lieu of Peeps candies (which I don't particularly care for) I will be celebrating with Twizzlers while wearing my comfortable Snoopy undies.

5 steps to being fearless
Challenges. Difficult situations. Hard decisions. Every day we are faced with any number of these. If you're stalled in how to overcome whatever obstacle is in your path, maybe these 5 steps to being fearless can help.
1. Have Faith
Believe in yourself. You can do this. You are stronger than you think so have faith in yourself.
2. Smile
No matter what, hold your head high and smile. Having a sense of humor in tough times helps, too.
3. Face It
It may seem easier to sit and not deal but only you can take control by facing your fears head on and resolving to overcome.
4. Take The First Step
The most difficult part is taking that first step. Don't let uncertainty hold you back. Difficult or easy, you need to move forward.
5. Don't Give Up
Even if you have to try again, keep going. Just don't give up.
I was on the fence about this post because I hate to come off all preachy. I write my fearless spiel every Friday and wonder, Is this any good? Do I sound like I belong behind a pulpit? Will any of my readers ever send me baked goods? But seriously, I'll continue with my Fearless Friday posts until I run out of ideas. Or until someone begs me to stop. Cookies will be considered a form of delicious bribery.

Funny answers to medical questions
This post might be violating 10 different HIPAA laws. Or not. But since I'm not naming names or vital statistics I should be in the clear.
---------------
Since Chris has diabetes it's recommended that he see an Optometrist to keep tabs on his eyes/vision because T1d doesn't just wreck your pancreas, it can also damage other organs. One of the many reasons why this disease sucks. Anyway, I promise this post gets funnier.
So, I made an appointment and the very nice woman who worked there directed me to their website to fill out the medical forms in advance. The questions were routine. Some of my answers, however, were not.
In the "Family Medical History" part it asked if the mother had any eye conditions. I technically don't but I've been putting off seeing an eye doctor myself because I'm a big wimp who's eyes aren't what they used to be.
My answer: Mom is currently ignoring any possible eye conditions.
When I told Bill he laughed. Not at my answer but at my honest reply. Then he proceeded with his same, tired speech about how I should just go and get my eyes looked at and blah blah blah.
Under the section "Personal Social History" it asked a series of questions such as, "Do you drive?" "Do you smoke?" "Do you use alcohol?" and "Do you use any illegal drugs?" Of course I answered NO to all because He's 10! And their final question was, "Anything else you'd like to tell us about your social history?"

My answer: Patient is 10. His only vice is playing too much Minecraft
on the computer. I wanted to add: If patient indulged in any of the above he would have more
problems than simple eye care.
I'm hoping my replies made their office laugh. Or at the very least smile. Is it too late to claim temporary insanity? Or a hacker? Or a temporary hacker?

Hump Day Confessions
Hump Day confession time!
I freely admit to writing this post while munching on some peanut M & M's and watching Thor for the 87th time. No shame. None.
I confess that I sometimes choose a trashy novel based on the good-looking guy on the cover. However, when I scan the back cover to see what it's about, if the plot sounds too stoopid I will promptly put it back. I do need some substance, people! Still, check out these covers.
I make a lot of Pop Culture references here on my blog and I confess that I have no plans to stop any time soon. Perhaps when I re-named my blog last November I should have gone with The Pop Culture Scribe.
Last weekend I unplugged for a day and a half, meaning I took a break from my computer and the Internet. And while it felt a bit like I was missing an arm I did not regret it. At all. And I even went Old Skool and wrote with an actual pen and paper.

Working with Sherry Baby
Many years ago when I was in High School I worked at a bathing suit store in one of our local malls. That was a fun job! Anyway, one of the girls I worked with was named, Sherry. So, of course, every time I had to talk to her I would do the Frankie Valli thing and sing "Sherry, Sherry Baby".
I'm sure she felt the same as I did/still do when someone would sing the Grease version of "Sandy" or "Sandra Dee". But still, I sang the song whenever I needed to speak to Sherry. Sometimes she laughed and shook her head. Sometimes she did the Jersey eye roll.
I was reminded of this recently when my parents were playing a Frankie Valli cd and that particular song came on.
Anyway, I wonder where she is today and if she remembers that crazy girl who used to sing her name. I like to think I broke up the monotony of the day, especially during the winter when we were so stinkin' slow.

The choice is yours
You have two choices when faced with something scary, troublesome, or uncertain. You can be afraid of it or you can face it head on and overcome.
The decision is yours so choose wisely.

Hump Day
Psst! Want to hear some confessions? Okay, good. Popcorn for everyone!
I confess that I've been watching the TV show, Chasing Life. At first I was on the fence about it because it's about a young woman dealing with a cancer diagnosis but now I watch it despite the parts that make me weepy.
I confess that prior to this past weekend I had never played Laser Tag. It was So Much Fun!!! Even though my kid (X-Ray) is a better shot than me I did get a respectable score for a first timer. Bill was Cyborg, which is funny considering he has titanium steel in his back from spinal surgery years ago.
I did even better the second time. Maybe because we had more people playing with us. Bill was Omega and Chris was Rogue.
Remember that coffee mug I made in my Zazzle store with the Sixteen Candles quote? Welllllll....turns out I conflicted with some guideline rules stuff so they sent me an email saying:
Unfortunately,
it appears that your product, Hot stuff coffee/tea mug, contains content that is
in conflict with one or more of our acceptable content
guidelines.
We will be removing this product from the Zazzle Marketplace shortly. Blah blah blah.
Whatever I did wrong was completely unintentional, however, I did see many other items with movie quotes on them so I'm wondering why my coffee mug was red flagged. But, I'm not curious enough to actually make a stink about it.

Thus ends our weekly confessional. Y'all come back now, ya hear!

Start spreading the news but use a chalkboard
A week ago Little Man and I went to New York New York casino because I thought it would be fun. For a Friday afternoon. On the Strip. I'm ridiculous that way. Normally we try to avoid the Strip on weekends like the plague because it's full of tourists and while I am grateful of their visit because it pays our taxes they sometimes annoy me provoke me to a murderous rage get on my nerves. Anyway, NYNY has this huge arcade called Coney Island so I loaded us up with quarters and dollars and off we went.
After playing for a while he eventually got bored so we wandered around inside and then took a brief walk out on the faux Brooklyn Bridge. Outside the casino on a side wall they have a big blackboard with chalk for visitors to write stuff.
I know it's not very original, however, in my defense, I was with my kid or else I might have written something inappropriate. Then again, when has that ever stopped me?
Another view. We may not be A number one but we were top of the list, or at the very least, top of the chalkboard. Anyway, we had a good time. We wanted to be a part of it New York, New York. And we were.
[Forgive the lyrical references to the song, "New York, New York" but I was trying to be clever. Note the word "trying".]

Hump Day Confessin' time
Oh Wednesday you dirty, little bird, come here and let me confess some shtuff (intentional 'h' put in there) to you!
After watching Sixteen Candles for the 527th time I made a coffee mug in my Zazzle store that says: "What's happenin' Hot Stuff" because I thought it would be a clever play on words. Hot Stuff. Coffee is hot. Um, ok.
I finally tried Burger King's Extra Long BBQ Cheeseburger. This looked soooo good with onion rings on top, I couldn't wait to try it! Sadly it was only so-so. The anticipation and commercial were better than the actual sandwich.
We were at the park and my son was playing with another boy. His mom called for him, "Tony!" And I thought of Tony, Danny's "friend" from The Shining.
My son thought of Tony Stark, naturally.
Bill thought of Tony Soprano complete with hand gesture. Now that I think of it, I'm surprised this wasn't my first Tony choice.
And this concludes this week's confessions. Time for some pizza-flavored goldfish!

Fun dream jobs
I read somewhere once that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. Or something like that. Makes sense to me because let's say you love make up. Then being a make up artist, or clown for that matter, would seem more like fun than a job.
So I got to thinking, what would I consider to be more fun than actual work? Some on this list of my dream jobs might look unrealistic but I'm sure there are people out there getting paid to do these things.
Mattress Tester
I would love to do this. Imagine getting paid to lay around and take a nap? The Simmons Beauty Sleep is comfy but I'm going to have to try the Serta Perfect Sleeper again. Wake me in 20 minutes.
Donut Taste Tester
This might not be the best job in our health conscious society but it sure would be the tastiest. Dunkin Donuts, do you have this position available? Call me.
Race Car Driver
My love of speed and the lead foot my husband claims I have make me wish I could be a race car driver. Driving fast legally? Yes, please.
80s Theme Party Consultant
I grew up in this decade so I know a thing or five about it. Music? Got it. Movies? Yep. Clothes? Ashamedly so. Still, I can make your party so, like, totally awesome!
Right now, though, I'd settle for a work-at-home job that let's me write for a living while sitting on my comfy bed eating donuts. The only fast thing needed would be my internet connection.

Fear in movies
For this week's Fearless Friday I thought I would share a few movie quotes that talk about fear.
From After Earth:
"Fear is not real, it is a product of thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me; danger is very real. But fear is a choice."
From The Green Lantern:
"Fear is the enemy of will. Will is what makes you take action. Fear is what stops you and makes you weak. You must ignore your fear. When you're afraid, you can't act."
From Apocalypto:
"Fear is a sickness. It will crawl into the soul of anyone who engages it."
From Star Wars Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace: (This is perhaps one of the most well-known movie quotes about fear.)
"Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
